니콘은 2008년 7월, 35mm FX 포맷 DSLR 카메라
D700과 함께 대용량 외장 플래시 스피드라이트 SB-900을 발표했다. 니콘 스피드라이트 SB-900은 2003년 출시된 스피드라이트
SB-800의 후속 모델로, 높은 GN과 빠른 충전 속도, 다양한 촬영 모드가 눈에 띄는 제품이다.
니콘 스피드라이트 SB-900은 ISO 100에서 GN 34,
ISO 200에서 GN 48의 광량을 지원한다. 니콘 크리에이티브 라이팅 시스템과 완벽하게 호환돼 i-TTL과 무선 조광 촬영에도 대응한다.
새로 추가된 기능은 조광 설정에 따른 발광 타입 전환 기능. 스탠다드 / 중앙부 중점 / 균질 발광 등 3가지 메뉴로 이루어진 발광 타입 설정
기능은 주간 싱크로 촬영시 중앙부 중점 발광, 배경까지 묘사해야 할 경우 균질 발광 등 촬영 목적에 맞춘 발광 모드를 지원하는 기능이다. 또한,
함께 출시되는 니콘 D700에 연결하면 플래시 본체 펌웨어 업데이트가 가능하다는 점도 눈에 띈다.
니콘 스피드라이트 SB-900은 FX 포맷뿐만 아니라 DX
포맷에도 대응해 각각 17 ~ 200mm, 12 ~ 200mm 조광 각도를 지원한다. 전원은 AA형 배터리 4개로 SB-800에 비해 충전
시간이 출어들었다. 발광부 바운스시 우측으로 180도까지 회전시킬 수 있게 되었다는 점도 SB-800과의 차이점. 발광부에 컬러 필터를 장착하면
색온도 데이터를 카메라 본체에 보내주는 기능도 추가되었다. 성능이 늘어난 만큼 후면 LCD 아래 조작계 버튼도 다수 추가되었다.
본체 크기는 78 x 118.5 x 146mm, 무게는 415g
